Madrigals is a small select group of singers. Audition for this group is required and you must be a junior or senior and be passing a least five classes to be a member of the group. Madrigals enjoy being a part of every vocal music production at South and singing in places throughout the community. Madrigal retreat is a highlight of the class. This retreat is at the beginning of the school year and is a weekend of fun, camping, and fellowship. Showstoppers is a select woman's show group. In this group the choir sings as well as dance. Good dancing skills are a must for this group therefore auditions in both singing and dancing are required to be a member. The Fall Cabaret is a show dedicated to Showstoppers. They have the main numbers in this cabaret show, which also includes solos and a number with madrigals. Concert choir is a select large choir of experienced vocalists. This is the top level of large choirs at South. Many of the students are in more than one choir but it is not a requirement. Concert choir enjoys going to the City Choir Festival and participating in the concerts throughout the year. In this class students know how to sight-read, determine the key in which their music has been written and they know most music terminology. Mixed chorus is a co-ed choir of beginning vocalists. This choir is usually the beginning choir for males and a select choir for females. In this class students learn key signatures, sight-reading, and musical terminology. Students enjoy going to City Choir Festival and participating in most of the music programs. Women's chorus is a ladies choir for beginning vocalists. Most of the women in this choir are freshman beginning the vocal music program. Women in this choir start building sight-reading skills and prepare for mixed chorus curriculum. By participating in the curriculum they build leadership skills which help them succeed in upper-level choirs.
