American
Legion Post 401 HISTORY
OF AIR
CAPITOL POST NO. 401 THE
AMERICAN LEGION WICHITA, KANSAS
In the fall of 1962,
an advertisement was placed in the local paper to ask veterans to attend a
meeting to organize a new American Legion Post. Fifty eager veterans responded
to form the organization now as air capitol American Legion Post 401.
On January 28 1962
the commitment was made and a temporary charter was applied for. Members of 401
conducted meetings at the Broadview Hotel until the current building located at
101 East 33 rd street South, Wichita, Kansas, 67216 was rented. Initially it was
UNOFFICIALLY called the “it’ll do club”. The logic behind this was that
it’ll do until they could break ground on a permanent post home. The
pro-tem officers elected were: Commander---------Harold
Walton 1st
vice ----------------Harry Webster 2nd
vice------------------Fred Webster Sgt-at-arms---------Hebert
Hoffman 0n October 3, 1963
air capital 401 arrived permanent. The post home was purchased and renovations
began immediately. Currently the only original fixtures are the gaslights next
to the stage. The membership of the
post grew to almost 500 veterans and on July 5, 1980 the post was paid for.
Members joined for a mortgage burning ceremony. The post has a membership of nearly 700. |
