The ACT assesses students’ general educational development and their ability to
complete college-level work.
The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading
and science.
The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning and writing a
short essay.
Juniors are encouraged to take the ACT during the spring semester of their
junior year. Seniors are encouraged to take the test early during the fall
semester of their senior year.

The SAT assesses student reasoning based on knowledge and skills developed by
the student in school coursework. The new SAT will improve the alignment of the
test with current curriculum and institutional practices in high school and
college. By including a third measure of skills, writing, the New SAT will
reinforce the importance of writing throughout a student’s education and will
help colleges make better admissions and placement decisions.

FEDERAL STUDENT AID AND GRANTS
The U.S. Department of Education has established a website
to file the
Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA)
over the Internet.
The web site address is www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Application over the web is fast, easy, and
more accurate than paper.
You must first request a PIN number www.pin.ed.gov.
This is your electronic signature for FAFSA on the web.
Both the student and one parent need to apply for
separate PIN numbers.
The student can use the PIN to access their student aid history
or correct their Student Aid Report (SAR) online.
Students are encouraged to apply for PIN numbers ASAP.
Priority deadline for filing the

Scholarships

ASAP Wichita State University – NEW Sedgwick County Scholarship
Amount: $1000 per semester (12 or more credit hours)
$500 per semester (6-11 credit hours)
Awards are for one academic year and may be combined with other scholarships.
Awarded on a first-applied, first-awarded basis until monies are exhausted.
Who can Apply: New freshmen must meet one of these criteria: be a domestic,
undergraduate, first-time student to WSU, ACT composite score of 21 or higher
(SAT=980), rank in the top one-third of graduating class, admissible student who
participated in Kansas Kids or USD 259 GEAR UP Program (must note on
application). New transfer students: be a domestic, undergraduate, first-time
student to WSU, must have graduated from a Sedgwick County high school or
currently be a Sedgwick County resident, or transfer to WSU with 65 or fewer
credit hours and minimum 3.0 GPA.

submit a completed scholarship application which includes a personal statement

K-State at Salina – ELITE Scholarship Program
ELITE – (Enhancing Lives Through Technology and Engineering) – a National
Science Foundation Scholarship Grant program
Amount: 15-25 annual scholarships - $5,000
Who can Apply: New incoming students, current K-State students and transfer
students must meet one of the criteria: first generation college student, come
from a rural area, economically disadvantaged, member of a minority group – must
be a US citizen and demonstrate financial need and complete the FAFSA.

Amount: Tuition fees/textbook costs will be paid directly to BCC or WATC

Amount: $1,000
Who can Apply: High school seniors who are planning to attend a Kansas college
and major in either a natural resources or photography curriculum.

4/15/07 2007 Student-View Scholarship Program
Amount: 1 - $3,000; 2 - $1,000; 6 - $500
Who can Apply: High school seniors who plan to attend a four-year college,
community college or career school. No minimum ACT/SAT score or GPA, no essay
required, no lengthy application forms, no application fees.
How to Apply: Log on to www.student-view.com and complete a 15-20 minute
application survey about colleges in your area. The scholarship will be awarded
via a random drawing of all completed applications. The scholarship winner will
be announced in May, 2007.

ATTENTION STUDENTS INTERESTED COLLEGE ATHLETIC TRAINING:
Barton County Community College sports medicine department is looking for
students who are interested in joining their student athletic trainers’ staff
while continuing their education in college. Each student receives a books and
tuition performance award to help meet college expenses. A minimum of 12
semester hours and an overall GPA of 2.0 must be maintained. For more

Highland Community College is looking for students who are interested in
Athletic Training. In-state students will be offered a books and tuition

Upward Bound Math & Science
Upward Bound Math and Science is a six week residential program for high school
students for enrichment in math and science. UBMS is 100% funded by a grant from
